It’s because her face is pulled too tight. Judging by her temple area, it looks like she’s had at least two facelifts (I cut hair for years and saw shit up close you don’t want to see). After the second lift, they start to look alien-like in person.

UN Approves Goldstone Report

After a two-day debate on a report by former war crimes prosecutor Richard Goldstone, there were 114 votes in favour, 18 opposed and 44 abstentions. — BBC

The report will now be sent to the UN Security Council, Goldstone recommends referring both sides to the International Criminal Court if they fail to conduct credible investigations into alleged abuses during the Gaza conflict. The US and China are likely to veto such a move.

Israel’s military continues to object to the report while holding its own investigations which Israeli Human Rights group B’Tselem have criticised for focusing on “individual soldiers, not unlawful policies”.

Goldstone report: A Jewish view

Rachel Barenblat (aka ‘Velveteen Rabbi’) reports on a rabbinic conference call she took with the Judge Goldstone last month:

“The Israeli government and the American government have done their best to quash the Goldstone report. Many Jewish organizations have joined them. But that’s by no means the only extant opinion in the Jewish community. Earlier in the week, US House of Representatives voted to reject the report [we have to wonder WTF?! it has to do with them]. Goldstone pre-empted this vote with a letter in an attempt to correct the factual errors in H.Res.867.

South African blowback

Following Judge Goldstone’s report, South African lawyers are looking into claims that South African citizens joined the Israeli army and were fighting in Gaza. Photographic evidence has been found on social networking sites like Facebook. They could be prosecuted for war crimes and under South African law which “bars any citizen from fighting for a foreign force without express government permission.” — read more…

Regular readers may, like my own children, be a little baffled by my apparent obsession with, and opposition to, our war. I am no less surprised to find myself, nearing 50, shouting at the TV as our elected leaders and their faithful stenographers in the media spurt more lies so that yet another generation may know the infinite indignities of armed conflict.

As Britain has sprouted its annual harvest of commemorative poppies ahead of today’s marches, church services and memorial ceremonies, it has coincided (if that’s the right word) with the news that a number of British soldiers have been killed by an Afghan policeman. We are also reminded that it is 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The siren voices of newspapers command us to “never forget”, but in truth they are calling us to participate in a national act of selective amnesia. Never forget the fallen. Never forget to honour our forces. Never forget to support the “heroes” who invaded and occupy Afghanistan. But to remember the fact that our attack on that country eight years ago was an act of revenge and aggression; that our subsequent attack on Iraq, while more controversial, was no more or less in contravention of the Nuremberg Principles; that we were sold the fall of the Wall as promising a Peace Dividend; that the same people gain from war now as they did in 1914, and it is being fuelled by the same young men and women on a diet of the same lies, is not welcome.

As a child in the 1960s, for whom the nightly TV pictures of Vietnam were someone else’s war, I grew up genuinely, stupidly, believing that the 1939-45 war that still filled our culture and our national myth was the stuff of the past. Unaware, then, of the dirty wars, the proxy wars, the coups and the low-intensity conflicts with which countries like mine maintained their stranglehold on wealth and power, I would have simply not believed that my middle years would see my country invading and bombing others for no reason. I can scarcely believe it now. And the war fever I see all around me seems as alien and frightening as it would to my childhood self 40 years ago.

There is no truth in this statement. It is the equivalent of his predecessor John Howard’s lie that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.

Shortly before Kevin Rudd made that statement, American planes bombed a wedding party in Afghanistan. At least sixty people were blown to bits, including the bride and groom and many children. That’s the fifth wedding party attacked, in our name.

The prime minister was standing outside a church on a Sunday morning when he made his statement. No reporter challenged him. No one said the war was a fraud: that it began as an American vendetta following 9/11, in which not a single Afghan was involved. No one put it to Kevin Rudd that our perceived enemy in Afghanistan were introverted tribesmen who had no quarrel with Australia and didn’t give a damn about south-east Asia and just wanted the foreign soldiers out of their country. Above all, no one said: “Prime Minister, There is no war on terror. It’s a hoax. But there is a war of terror waged by governments, including the Australian government, in our name.” That wedding party, Prime Minister, was blown to bits by one the latest smart weapons, such as the Hellfire bomb that sucks the air out of the lungs. In our name.

“Increasingly presentations to large audiences are happening in the context of a ‘backchannel’, where attendees are responding in real time to what is being said at the podium. That’s a pretty interesting development, but one that’s a bit off-balance: while the audience can converse with one another and respond to what they’re hearing in the room, the content of the presentation doesn’t make it into the stream unless someone (re)tweets it.

So what if your presentation software could send tweets on your behalf that were timed to the slides of your presentation? You could effectively simulcast your presentation through the backchannel as a part of the conversation, adding ‘more info’ links, credits, or anything else you could imagine…

Enter Keynote Tweet, a simple open-source script that provides the capacity to participate in the backchannel by combining Twitter with Apple Keynote. All you have to do is add text wrapped in [twitter] and [/twitter] tags in the presenter notes section of a slide. When that slide comes up in the presentation the script grabs that text and sends it to Twitter on your behalf.”
